In English last week and in coming weeks we will be creating our own stories. We had to create our own characters and setting and what was going to happen. We started on the beginning paragraph last Friday. Everyone had different ideas. Some people did animal stories and some did adventure stories and others did horror. Check back next week to find out more.

On Thursday the 9th of October the 5th class girls in St.Fiaccs went to meet Judi Curtin in the library. Some of the girls have heard of her before and everyone was excited. As we got to the library and sat down we were joined by 6th class girls from Scoil Muire(I think it was anyway!).Then Judi came in and she got a big round of applause. She started by introducing herself and how she loved being a teacher. But she said that after about 20 years being a teacher she wanted to try something new. So she asked her children and all they came up with was completely out of this world ideas! So she thought back on what she wanted to be when she was younger. She remembered that she wanted to write a book and then she wrote a book called ‘Sorry,Walter’ and decided she would try to get it published and sent it to 17 different publishers and they all said ‘No thank you’ and then she gave up but after another while she tried again and got it published and got another published called ‘From Claire to here’ and another called ‘Almost Perfect’.All of these were adultbooks.
So she decided to write a children’s book and she called it ‘Alice Next Door’ and it became a best seller!!!Then she did a whole series of books. The second one was called ‘Alice Again’ and ‘Don’t ask Alice’ and Alice in the Middle’ and ‘Bonjour Alice’(personally my favourite!!)and her newest book ‘Forever Alice’.All of them were best sellers. Judi Curtin now lives in Limerick with her kids and husband.

In history for the past 2 weeks we have been learning about Nelson Mandela. He was born in South Africa in 1918. At the time it was very hard to be a black person. All the white people wanted to be separated from the black people. Nelson’s father was the leader of the tribe he lived in. His father was friendly with a retired teacher and he told his father that he should be sent to school. So he was and later he went to university which not a lot of black people could do let alone get into a school.
He qualified as a lawyer and he hoped that one day he could try and end the system of apartheid. In later years he decided to join the ANC(African National Congress)and was put in jail at Robben Island for 26 years. Mandela was released after spending 10000 days in prison. The ANC was unbanned and the black people were allowed to vote for the first time. Some years later Nelson was elected as the first black president of South Africa. He then won the Nobel Peace Prize and has written a lot of books since then. He is now 90 years old. Submitted by eh.
